Accreditations

The UK electricity market, regulated by Ofgem, can be split down in to four phases, Generation, Transmission, Distribution and Supply. DNOs and IDNOs are responsible for the operation, maintenance and control of electricity networks. Within the Distribution sector, Lloyds accredited Independent Connections Providers (ICPs) design and construct these high to low voltage energy distribution infrastructures on behalf of residential and commercial property developers. Once constructed, the ICP contracts with the IDNO/DNO to adopt these networks and undertake their ongoing management.

We independently assess service providers working within the electricity, gas, and water sectors in the UK. By operating these assessment schemes, they help assure a common level of competency through technical assessments.

All distribution network operators (DNOs) on mainland UK recognise this scheme and, provided that the NERS providers hold the appropriate UK utility schemes accreditations, the NERS provider can compete for work within the contestable connections market. When awarding contracts to registered NERS providers, the developer, who is usually the client organisation, can be confident that once the work has been completed, the host DNO will adopt the connection for the remainder of its lifetime. All contractors who wish to undertake any part of the contestable connections process including project management, design, cable installation etc require the relevant accreditation.

Ofgem

Ofgem is the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets. They are a non-ministerial government department and an independent National Regulatory Authority, recognised by EU Directives.

Their principal objective is to protect the interests of existing and future electricity and gas consumers. They work to ensure Britain’s electricity wholesale and retail markets are competitive and regulate the natural monopolies that exist in distribution and transmission networks.

The Gas Safe Register is operated on behalf of the relevant Health and Safety Authority and is the only official gas registration body of gas businesses and engineers in the United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Guernsey.

The Supply Point Administration Agreement (SPAA) sets out the inter-operational arrangements between Gas Suppliers and Transporters in the UK retail market. It is a multi-party agreement to which all Domestic Gas Suppliers and all Gas Transporters are required by their Licences to accede.  SPAA ensures critical design and construction measures are adopted and appropriate installations methods are employed for the installation and exchange of new, existing domestic and non-domestic metering.
